If you’re visiting Echuca Moama and want to ride a bike, here’s some local recommendations of trails, tracks and coffee destinations!
1. Echuca Scenic Trail
The Echuca Scenic Trail is a 5km loop that begins just near Victoria Park, Crofton Street. It’s a popular walking and cycling track with locals and visitors, and a great way to enjoy some of Echuca Moama’s nature based attractions. With great views of the Murray and Campaspe Rivers (which meet at around the half way point), this is one of Echuca’s most relaxing and rejuvenating places to cycle. At the completion of the loop you might like to treat yourself to a coffee at the Sweet Meadow, or an ice-cream at the Port Ice-Creamery – both are in High Street, and are both a favourite of David’s.
2. St Anne’s Winery & 3 Black Sheep Moama
St Anne’s Winery and the 3 Black Sheep are both found just off Perricoota Road in Moama. Your ride begins at the Echuca Visitor Centre. Cycle over the Bridge into Moama – take a detour to the left to Moama Beach, or to the right to Horseshoe Lagoon. Meander your way through the back streets to Perricoota Road and cycle a few kilometres out to 3 Black Sheep. This is a fantastic little café and restaurant serving great coffee and excellent food. The next stop, a kilometre away is St Anne’s, Moama’s award winning winery and cellar door. Enjoy a free wine tasting, or a delicious cheese platter, before cycling back to Moama. This trip is around 10km. It involves minimal riding on the road, a great ride on a standard bike or E-bike.
3. Riverbank Restaurant & Café
Riverbank Restaurant is Moama’s newest restaurant and it’s getting fabulous reviews. We recommend jumping on your bike and cycling over the bridge to Moama. Prior to the roundabout do a u-turn at the Kerrabee Sound Shell Park, and take the cycling/walking track under the bridge up to Shaw Street. Cycle past the Moama Bowling Club on your left, and follow Shaw street until it becomes Holmes Street. Continue until you reach Edwards Street, turn left. Then take the first right into Old Barmah Road. Continue on past Discovery Park on your right, to Moama Waters. Riverbank is nestled on the river bank at Moama Waters holiday park. Cycle through the entrance and keep going, and you won’t miss it. Reward yourself with coffee, and morning tea or lunch. Riverbank has a great menu, and a fantastic cake range. Their coffee gets a big tick as well. Check opening days/times before cycling to Riverbank.
“This ride has it all – sealed roads, bush scenery and fantastic Murray river views when you arrive. Stay a while and then enjoy meandering back to Echuca.”
Round trip is approximately 10kms. A very comfortable ride on an E-bike or standard bike. Bookings at Riverbank recommended.
4. Banuyle Forest Ride
Commencing behind the Echuca Visitor Centre, find a path that takes you towards the historic Echuca Moama Bridge. There’s a maze of tracks and trails in the Banyule Forest area. A favourite of David’s is riding the single track on an electric mountain bike, alongside the banks of the Murray River, to Chinamen’s bend where you can relax on the sand bank on the river edge, and take in the river views. This is where the Stand Up Paddle Boarders (SUP) start their journey down the Murray River. Relax a while, before heading back up Middle Track to Pakenham Street. Or just prior to Pakenham Street, turn right onto the levee bank track and cycle back to the Echuca Visitor Centre. Then, take your pick from a variety of coffee locations in the Port of Echuca Area. David is partial to the brew at the Black Pudding in High Street.
5. Campaspe River Ride
Your ride begins at Lions Park, Campaspe Esplanade just off Ogilvie Avenue. Lions Park is a popular picnic spot beside the Campaspe River and is also where parkrun is held on Saturday mornings. Follow the meandering Campaspe River on a sealed path and cycleway. Make sure your bike bell is working as you’re sure to encounter plenty of walkers and joggers. You’ll also see people on bikes, e-bikes, scooters and skates. The path follows the river through natural bushland. You’ll notice two footbridges providing linkages across the river into the township.
Once you reach the Warren Street Bridge you have the 3 options. You can cross the Campaspe River and follow the trail along the east side of the river, behind the shops and businesses in High street, before crossing back over the Anstruther Street footbridge. Or turn left and cycle to the Northern Highway, left again at Butchers Street and ride back to the Campaspe river track, and up to Lions Park. The third option is to cycle back the way you’ve just come. This is an easy 5km ride.
See if you can spot the possum glider boxes, listen for the sounds of the birds and enjoy the natural bush scenery. When you finish your ride it’s a quick cycle up towards the Northern Highway to the Moama Bakery (yes, in Echuca!) in the Crossenvale Village complex, where you can enjoy a coffee and an extensive selection of mouth watering bakery items.
